De-mystifying Kundalini Yoga with Gloria Latham
You may have seen snapshots of Gloria’s soul shaking raves around the world, or seen her captured on picturesque beachside cliffs in Greece or even done of her classes at Semperviva Yoga in her home city of Vancouver, Canada.
But the secret is out, Gloria is returning to Melbourne and we couldn’t be more delighted to be hosting her for the second time this year for two workshops at our South Melbourne studio. We were able to ask Gloria a few questions about her passion of sharing her passion as a Kundalini Yoga Teacher.
Gloria, we can’t wait to have you back in Melbourne at the end of March for two workshops based around your mastery of teachings through Kundalini Yoga. Would you mind translating what Kundalini Energy is?
Kundalini Energy is your untapped potential. You can think of it as your real goals (dharma) that are fully aligned with your soul.
My classes and workshops draw from the tradition of Kundalini Yoga but they don’t follow the traditional “Kriyas” or exercise sets. You can expect just about anything from a deep meditative experience to a full out dance party, depending on the energy of the room and where it feels we need to go in that moment.
You are one busy Yogini, an owner of multiple businesses, a travelling teacher & global ambassador & balancing your time with your family, how do you like to schedule your dat or do you have some daily habits or rituals you would like to share?
My “ideal" day would always begin with yoga and meditation. My “real” days, look a little different. Sometimes I only meditate in the morning and save my yoga practice for later in the day. My routine changes daily but somewhere each day, I make sure I get on my mat to move and breathe.
My practice is my life line. I know that the hardest thing to do in the morning when you feel pressed for time, is to slow down for yoga or meditation. But these few moments of peace save hours of wasted time caused by feeling unfocused, tired, or uninspired.
What was your own personal experience like when you begun practicing Kundalini Yoga?
I cried through my first Kundalini class, start to finish which was really embarrassing because I considered myself someone who doesn’t cry. I realised that day, I had a lot of emotion bottled up.
What is the difference between Kundalini Yoga compared to any other Yoga practice and style of Yoga?
The practice of Kundalini Yoga looks and feels quite different than other styles of yoga. There are no poses or levels, and there are some different breath techniques such as Breath of Fire, which is very energizing and cleansing. But,the goal of all yoga is the same, it is to raise your Kundalini Energy. The Kundalini Yogis say that raising that energy happens more quickly with Kundalini.
