A Guide to the Surf Coast

The beautiful surf town of Torquay marks the beginning of the famous Great Ocean Road and is only 1 hour 15 min drive from Melbourne. It is the perfect place for a day or over night trip out of the city and is home to some of the most beautiful beaches, best surf breaks and picturesque walks in Victoria. Resting right in the heart of it all is our Yoke yoga studio and we thought we would put together a guide of our favourite cafes, activities and surf breaks for anyone looking to spend some time on our stunning coast.

8am Coffee at Pond. Pond cafe is located on the Torquay Esplanade and have arguably some of the best coffee on the Surf Coast. On warm days they open the bifold doors to let the salty ocean breeze and sun shine in while you sip on your latte.

9.30am yoga at Yoke. Of course yoga is included in this guide! We have a 75 minute class on everyday at 9.30am so depending on your energy, you can take a vinyasa, slow flow or restorative yin session. Check the website for full timetable

11.30am Surf session. It would be unheard of to come to the Surf Coast of Australia without going surfing. You can book into a private or group surf lesson with the Torquay Surf Academy or Go Ride a Wave, or you can hire some boards and head out by yourself. Depending on your experience they will be able to guide you to the best breaks based on the conditions for that day. As a beginner you might like to try Cosy Corner or Torquay beach. For more confident surfers head, to the iconic Bells Beach or Winki Point.

1.30pm Lunch at Ginger Monkey. Located just next door to Yoke, we LOVE Ginger Monkey. They have great coffee, snacks and a diverse vegetarian lunch menu that is bound to warm your belly. Every day in winter they have a different soup on the menu, and in summer a different salad.

3pm Walk the Bells Beach track. The coastal Bells Beach walk from Jan Juc beach is a 3.2km cliff top walk that takes you past some of the best surf breaks in Australia. Stop at one or all of the amazing lookouts with stunning views of the Victorian coastal landscape.
